Tonight

Chef and I went to the shops for late night shopping. Alone. Granted, it was 8pm and the boys were all in bed. Granted, we were home by 8.50pm and sure, the only thing we actually bought were some pencils for the boys. But At the rock climbing joy last weekend I snapped my glasses. Granted, I'd been whinging about how I needed new frames blah blah blah for oh, about 18 months, so I should have been pretty darn pleased, but when you are as blind as I am and only own one pair of glasses (something I have now learnt I need to rectify) it was actually a monumental pain in the arse. Combined with the fact it happened on Day 1 of Return To The Happy Pill and the gagillion things we had on that day, I was pretty pissed about it. So all this week, I've walked around with glasses that have a big wad of superglue holding them together, clearly visible due to the snap being on the bridge section that sits on my nose. Yup, I am one classy lady. But Tonight, we went to the optometrist, and I got me a new pair of frames. I have to get my eyes checked on Saturday because they haven't been checked in about oh, 3.5 years, and then I have to wait another whole week but then, I'll have sexy new glasses that made me all bouncy and happy. I will even model them for you all. After that is a haircut. And colour. It's the big issues discussed here folks.

Me too! Except I don't color my hair, nor do I have anyone else do it for me.

Now, as re. glasses. This is what I do, feel free to steal this idea.

I buy the frames separately, invariably for a LOT less than at the eye guy's. I usually buy sunglasses (Polo, Gucci, whatever) at a ridiculous price and get TWO identical ones. I then have Rx lenses fitted to one of those pair. When the pair inevitably snaps into eleventy pieces, all I have to do is take out the Rx lenses, and put them into the as-yet-unused identical pair.

Oh, I also have 5 different sets of eyeglasses, and 4 of sunglasses.

Yes.

I know.

Did you do the 'pry the forgotten contacts out of their hidey-hole in the medicine cabinet' too?

I always forget I own the darn things....

Can't wait to see you all spiffy!

I need new frames too but I just spent a fortune making sure 2 children got theirs first. My hair hasn't been cut in about 6 years. It has been longer since I colored it. You have now raised the bar.

Not to be outdone by Joke's excellent thriftiness, if you want to book a couple of hours over my way (or I'll come to you), for $25 there are some really excellent colour and highlights kits you can buy now - I'll do yours if you do mine (I always end up putting my shoulders out by reaching around the back of my head!)

Joke - is that like having undies with the days of the week stenciled on them?

Bec - while I think your hair is glorious - all shiny, healthy and thick, the last time I coloured my hair it came out a fluorescent orange rather than the honey brown or whatever the colour was meant to be. I'll stick with Toby, my own little piece of eye candy who also does a great cut and colour. And the pressure on doing someone elses - if my adrenalin/stress levels while cutting the boys hair is anything to go by - would be too much for me. I do NOT want to be the one who finally proves the home colouring kits don't work...on someone else's head.

Kim,

The thing of it is that when I find these cheap frames (Gucci! $2!) I just can't pass them up. So, I have a pair for everyday (presentable but sturdy), a pair for getting all dressed up, a pair for doing athletic-type stuff, a pair for travel (verrrrrry light) and a "fun" pair.

I am also fortunate my prescription really hasn't changed in forever.

P.S. This cheapness is a penance for falling in love with a pair about 6 years ago, spending a RIDICULOUSLY HIGH amount on them, showing them to Poppy who loved them and, promptly, losing them.

Hurray! New glasses frames .. well, I don't wear glasses but if I did I'm sure new ones would thrill me :)
Sometimes it doesn't take much to pep us up, or bring us down now that I think of it ...

Vickee,

The $2 Guccis were sunglasses on clearance at Nordstrom's Off The Rack. I've also bought $4 Polos and $5 Burberrys.

The trick is to visualize the sunglasses with clear, Rx lenses.

Nordstrom's Off The Rack is the Nordstrom's Rack outlet.

A lot of the stuff they have is, invariably, $#!+, but when you get something, the prices are jaw-droppingly low.
